This week I did two recipes. One of them I liked a lot, and will write about, and one was just "meh" so I won't write that one up. I tried a ginger cookie, like molasses cookies, but it just wasn't amazing. If I'm gonna eat cookies, in my new way of eating, they have to be incredible, not merely passable.
The recipe that did work out, I quite liked. It's one of my older recipes from my collection, and I was unable to track down the source, so I can write it out here.
Spiced Oranges
8 or 9 oranges
3/4 cup red wine
6 Tbsp. sugar
Cinnamon
Ground Cloves
Section oranges to remove all membranes.Arrange the sections in a serving dish.
In a saucepan, combine wine, sugar, and a generous dash each cinnamon and ground cloves. Heat the mixture, stirring frequently, until the sugar is dissolved and pour it immediately over the orange sections.
Let the dessert cool and serve chilled.
This is so simple to make! The hardest part is sectioning the oranges. I only used one since I was the only one eating this. Make sure to section them over the plate you'll be serving so you catch all the dripping juice to add extra flavor.
I cut the sugar down to one teaspoon of brown sugar, and just used enough wine that I thought would cover the orange. I also cooked the wine long enough till I thought most of the alcohol had burned off, since I don't really like that taste.
Make sure to turn the orange pieces over a couple times so they absorb the wine mixture evenly.
These would be good on ice cream or on pound cake or angelfood cake. But I like them just plain.
I was thinking these would be good to eat while watching It's A Wonderful Life. When Clarence is at the bar and starts talking about the mulled wine, "heavy on the cinnamon, light on the cloves," this would be perfect to eat!
This flavor, with the wine, the oranges, and the winter spices, is so perfectly Christmassy! There's something old-fashiond-y about it. I'm really happy I finally tried this one!
